Small Change Quilts

How the world has changed since I started making these quilts a few months ago! I stitched them with my assistant Lucy enjoying the last of her daily company, and now she’s moved back to her home town and with my mum while they were down helping us paint the new house. I found peace and solace in appliqueing the blocks leading up to our move, my reward for packing endless boxes. And then I finished sewing up the quilt tops as the tidal wave of virus news washed over us these last few weeks. This photo was taken on a careful evening walk after 10 days staying within our yard. The girls ran. It’s wonderful how kids will run as soon as they’re set free in a large space, isn’t it? They were like puppies, running ahead, running back to check in, running back out again. Tim and I walked behind them, taking our time to look at the light and the trees. I wouldn’t have thought to come to this creek-side path unless I had quilts to photograph. I feel safe and happy enough at home. But on this walk, I felt myself expand out. Become more. The scrolling phone, the constant wondering. It makes you crumple in, don’t you think? But going outside makes you stand up straighter, breathe in deeper. Fill out. I’ll need to remember that in the coming weeks.

Now, to quilt them. I wonder what stories they will hold then? I’m so grateful for pretty colours and peaceful stitches to help hold all those feelings and memories.

The PDF pattern and EPP kit for the Small Change Quilts collection is now here! The PDF includes 3 separate quilts patterns, requirements list, a colouring page for each quilt, and a printable hexie template sheet. Everything you need to dive right in! The EPP kit includes all the hexies to make one quilt, and a 1” hexagon acrylic template.

I’m so completely thrilled with this collection! Such simple designs, and yet so pretty and full of potential. I’ve started another Tuppence Quilt (the middle one) using scraps, and I’ve got plans for another scrappy Florin (left), but with different coloured backgrounds, and for Haypenny (right) for one colour for the inner diamond, and one for the outer. We’ll see if time allows now that the kids are home and I’m cutting kits without Lucy! Maybe I should rope the kids in?!

You can find the PDF pattern here, and the EPP kit here.
